My Idea of Heaven

Got this video from one of my friendster testimonials. It’s a great video with a great concept. One of those “aaawwwww” kind of videos that give you a warm fuzzy feeling in the end. Watch out for the old couple writing down their wishes in the latter part of the video.They say that heaven is not really a geographical place but a state of mind. So that what Leigh Nash is singing about is true: my idea of heaven is staying here with you. Heaven is not a place to go to; but it is someone to be with.

My idea of heaven is something akin to this. It is being with somebody really special and not ever being lonely again. It is like that memorable quote from the movie Shall We Dance:

“We need a witness to our lives. There’s a billion people on the planet… I mean, what does any one life really mean? But in a marriage, you’re promising to care about everything. The good things, the bad things, the terrible things, the mundane things… all of it, all of the time, every day. You’re saying ‘Your life will not go unnoticed because I will notice it. Your life will not go un-witnessed because I will be your witness’.”

My idea of heaven is having someone to witness my life; to notice my life. Not in a grand, majestic, press-carnival way with medals of valor and stories of greatness. But in the solitude of a small room. I want someone to be there when I wake up early in the morning. I want to kiss someone’s forehead before she goes to sleep. I don’t need a medal. I need a witness. I don’t need to be written about in books. I want someone to know me so intimately that we laugh together at nothing in particular, and when we look each other in the eye, we know–with the sureness of true intimacy–what will happen next.
