Rays of Hope

It seems like something happened in this particular election. For some reason, we have all become wiser (or at least we have all become less apathetic). Or probably wiser to the gimickry of our politicians. The Filipino is really starting to think–probably because of a deep-seated anger at what’s happening to us, or probably because everyone’s tired of being victimized by the politics of personalities.

I saw it coming when Manny Pacquiao started campaigning for Lito Lapid in Makati. Being a Makati resident myself, I was afraid people would buy the Pacquiao campaign hook-line-and-sinker. But no. People interviewed on the streets said they all came because Pacquiao is their “idol”. But it doesn’t mean they’ll vote for Lito Lapid. Hmmm…

Some people have called it the GMA effect. There is an overwhelming anti-Arroyo vote with the choices of the senators. Pacquiao losing in the elections, they say, is not just about boxing (i.e. people wanting him to stay in boxing) but because he is seen as an Arroyo-ally. Mike Defensor getting clobbered in the polls (have to check if this is true) brings us to the same conclusion.

This is from Howie Severino’s blog. To read more of this article, click here.

Pacquiao getting trumped by Darlene: Trends in the Gensan congressional elections so far show that for all his fame, our world champion boxer can’t get over the hump presented by his petite opponent. Faced with a wildly popular candidate, a dynamic dynastic heir with a good machinery can still win. We retain our champions in both boxing and the House.

Running Priest in Pampanga: Father Eddie Panlilio so far is ahead of his rivals, two symbols of antiquated politics, Mark Lapid and Lilia Pineda. Let’s just hope he really does introduce new ideas and not simply medieval ones in a fresh set of clothes, like that one about everyone going forth and multiplying. But perhaps governing one of the most populous provinces will prove to him the wisdom of family planning.
