Manliness is an ART. More appropriately, it is a lost art. Consider these numbers:
These are really just random stats I found somewhere on the net, but it makes the Art of Manliness all the more important. The Art of Manliness is dedicated to helping men uncover what manliness means in the 21st century. What skills and knowledge should a 21st Century man acquire? What traits should they develop? This is a good read for my guy friends, and to a certain extent for my women friends who needs a low down on their men. At the very least–and knowing how men can be so “lazy” about reading non-office stuff– my women friends can teach their men to read this site. hehe.
Some notable reads from the site and I suggest you begin with these: 100 Must Read Books for Men, The Greatest Speeches in History–try to read Winston Churchill, John F. Kennedy, and Alexander the Great. And if you think those two articles are too “nerdy”, you might like to check out How To Win A Streetfight in 8 Simple Steps, The 15 Greatest Man Cries in History (you really have to read this! An example: “In the hours before D-Day was to begin, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces, visited with the paratroopers of the 101st Airborne Division to bolster their morale. As he moved amongst the troops, Eisenhower’s heart was heavy; he knew a 70% casualty rate was possible for the men standing before him. At 11:00 pm, Eisenhower stood on the roof of the nearby headquarters and saluted each plane as it took off en route to France. As these brave men soared past him, tears filled Eisenhower’s eyes. “I’ve done all I can,” he had told them. “Now it is up to you.”), or Grilling the Perfect Steak.
And they even have a Barbershop Locator! I tell you, this is such a man’s site.
Robert Heinlein–the great science fiction writer, and many time Hugo Award winner–used to say, “”A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects.”
For teaching us the Art of Manliness–which has become increasingly difficult in this world and generation of unending and unfair expectations, Ang Peregrino Recommends The Art of Manliness this week.
