My friend, Shalum, is the food critic/photographer/resto tripper/foodie behind My Food Trips. No, she’s not paying me to do this, and no, I’m not doing this because I am part of many food trips she gets into. Hehe. But I’m doing this because I like how she has evolved into a really good food and resto critic.

My Food Trips started out as a Multiply blog, but has now become a full fledged blog in Blogspot. She started the whole blogging thing because she was homesick when my friend Mark (I mentioned him in another post) whisked her away from her hometown in Cagayan de Oro when they got married about a year ago. Talk about making good use of your time! Now, they try out different restos and eating places any time they get and Shalum would take out her trusted cam while Mark waits dutifully for her to click away before he digs in. Oh, and sometimes I tag along for the ride. :-)

I like her politely honest assessments of the restaurant interiors, service, food and over-all ambiance of the places she visits. While she gives honest reviews, she’s not scathing in her remarks and you can sense that it is a struggle for her to give negative appraisals of the places she visits. The late great Doreen Fernandez is like that—she’s very polite and does not resort to badmouthing in order to increase her readership. In fact, the ultimate insult would be for Doreen not to write about your resto after eating there—because that is how she thinks–if you cannot write anything good, then do not write at all. Or Do not bite the hand that feeds you. :p

I personally like that because it tells me that My Food Trips doesn’t have the usual stiff-upper lip that we have come to view food reviewers of today (think Anton Ego of Ratatouille, or HongKong based Chua Lam of the original Iron Chef). I think being positive is a much better way to talk about food–specially if you’re talking about food!– than finding fault with it.

For the great food pics, the honest but polite assessment of food, resto and service, and for the adventures that keep homesickness at bay, AngPeregrino Recommends My Food Trips this week.

“Ang Peregrino Recommends” comes out Monday of every week. Know of any cool products or websites which should be featured on Ang Peregrino Recommends? Read this first, before you Contact me.
