Scott Schuman started The Sartorialist when he realized that there was a disconnect between what is sold in the showroom from what he was seeing really cool people are wearing in real life.
Before The Sartorialist, Scott worked in sales and marketing for high-end women’s designer collections like Valentino and distribution companies like Onward Kashiyama, which at that time represented designers like Helmut Lang and Jean-Paul Gaultier. He eventually opened his own showroom specializing in sales and press for young designer collections like James Coviello and Peter Som.
Shortly after 9/11, he closed the showroom and began focusing on photography. His two loves—fashion and photography—eventually merged into The Sartorialist.
The Sartorialist tries to echo how a fashion designer would look at people on the streets–”I thought I could shoot people on the street the way designers looked at people, and get and give inspiration to lots of people in the process. My only strategy when I began The Sartorialist was to try and shoot style in a way that I knew most designers hunted for inspiration.”
While the runway can be very exclusive, street fashion is inclusive of all sexes, ages, economic classes; your expression is your real limitation.
Scott now shoots for style.com (the official website of VOGUE magazine) in the fashion capitals of the world – London, Paris, Milan. He also shoots and writes a monthly page for GQ Magazine and the Japanese Men’s Ex. It is one of the most popular blogs on the web right now (not a surprise since fashion is one of the favorite topics of people). Schuman has been listed as one of TIME Magazine’s top 100 design influencers.
For teaching us that if we know how to look, we could find inspiration anywhere, and for making us see that if you dress well, the streets can be your runway, Ang Peregrino Recommends The Sartorialist this week.
