APR86-Love Letters to the Future

Loveletters to the Future is a project by Dr. David Suzuki, an award winning Canadian scientist, geneticist, author and environmental activist. He is best known for over 45 books mostly for children, explaining complex science in simple terms.

The concept is simple: if you could make a message to your great grand children about the planet, what would it be? Send a message, make a video, write a letter, post a picture. Tell the future what it is like for us. And tell the future about our fears and our desires for a better world.

It is a good study, this letter writing thing. When I first went to the site, I tried to categorize the messages into logical groups. There’s a whole group trying to blame people for destroying the earth. And then there’s another group reminding the rest that people are still fighting for the environment, although admittedly, it could be better. Then there’s a whole group showing the future what we experience as nature today, and hoping that the future would have their own beauty to experience. And then there’s a whole slew of I LOVE YOU messages to the future.

And I think that is how we’ve been dealing with the future ever since. People have tried to blame the past or the present for the future, or seen hope amidst the difficulties, or dealt in nostalgia, or just plain focused on love.

Check it out. And leave your own message.
