It’s funny how it took a psy­chol­o­gist Her­bert Simon to give what I think is the best def­i­n­i­tion of what a designer is: ‘Every­one designs who devises courses of action aimed at chang­ing exist­ing sit­u­a­tions into pre­ferred ones.’

Chang­ing what exists into what is pre­ferred. Chang­ing what is, to some­thing beau­ti­ful. That is what a designer does. That is who he is.

Depres­sion in men is aggra­vated by the shame that comes with admit­ting that you are help­less and hope­less. Men–specially those raised to be self-sufficient and independent–would have a more dif­fi­cult time admit­ting, find­ing help and get­ting out of it.

Sev­eral weeks ago, I went to the Prop­erty Man­age­ment Office of my con­do­minium to make a for­mal com­plaint against chil­dren play­ing in the com­mon areas of our build­ing. I wanted a clar­i­fi­ca­tion on whether they are allowed to play in the area near my unit, since there are two beau­ti­ful play­grounds just out­side our build­ing. I com­plained that they were destroy­ing the plants in the com­mon area and that twice, a ball bounced on my windows.
