The Eight Great Worries of the World

In 2002, Pope John Paul II gave a speech to UN ambassadors. Reflecting on the world scene, with all its hopes and horrors, John Paul’s message is that nations and leaders must face eight great challenges if a more-just world is to be achieved.

Here are the 8 Great Challenges of the World…

Living in the Tensions 2: On Discernment

Last week, I talked about Living in the Tensions in terms of accepting the paradoxes of life. This week, let’s talk about living in the tensions in terms of it being a prerequisite for discernment.

St. Ignatius of Loyola has another word for living in the tensions: indifference. He said that we should be able to to hold ourselves in balance: not putting ourselves in one or the other choice or extreme. In fact, God’s will is said to be found in the tensions.

Living in the Tensions

Last week, I talked about the 20 Things I Learned in Life. I forgot to put in that list one really important lesson I have also learned. It’s good though because then it gives me a chance to talk about that topic today.

This lesson is something I learned in the Novitiate of the Society of Jesus, and it was taught to me/us by the great Fr. Benny Calpotura. He calls it “living in the tensions”. The concept is similar to Parmenides’ Golden Mean (check that out yourself in wikipedia! hehe).

Twinkle Twinkle Little Star

I first heard this story from a Jesuit priest when I was in High School. I remember he asked the choir to play Twinkle Twinkle Little Star before he said the homily. I also remember Fr. Bill Abbott, SJ sending me an email and ending with this story when I was teaching in Cebu. [...]

Weird

The priest in the mass I attended last Sunday talked about the gospel of the weeds and the wheat. I’m not sure if that was supposed to be the “real” Gospel (I’ve lost track of these things already), but he lost me after around 5 minutes of his droning. He lost me at hello. Hehe. [...]

Christianity is Communion

In the much-talked about movie The Priest, we have a priest who gets into a scandal for picking up a man and having sex with him. We also have a father who molests his own daughter. And we have parishioners who judged everything that happened.
The film ends with a mass. In that mass, everyone is [...]
