From Managing to Leading

[26 Jan 2010 | 0 Comments | ]

Management is different from Leadership.
Managers have a position of authority vested in them by the company, and their subordinates work for them and largely do as they are told. Management is transactional, in that the manager tells the subordinate what to do, and the subordinate does this not because they are a blind robot, but because they have been promised a reward (at minimum their salary) for doing so. [from ChangingMinds.org]
Leaders on the other hand do not have subordinates — at least not when they are leading. Many organizational …

Blast from the Recent Past: Nothing Compares To You

[25 Jan 2010 | 0 Comments | ]

Sinead O’Connor’s one of the most brilliant artists when I was growing up. She’s the Lady Gaga of my generation–pure brilliant genius minus the crazy stunts.

Nothing Compares To You has been called by VH1 as one of the Top 100 Songs of 90’s, for good reason. It’s one of the best made songs lyrically and musically. It’s music is haunting, almost pained, and you could feel the passion behind the lyrics. It talks of an experience we’re all familiar with–the painful memory of goodbye, the love that could have been perfect, and the tragedy of the one that got away.

Because we love, we are never the same again. We are forever scarred. We will always remember.

10 Non-“Secrets” About Grocery Shopping

[22 Jan 2010 | 0 Comments | ]
10 Non-“Secrets” About Grocery Shopping">

Ever since I became independent from my parents (when I lived in a dorm back in college), I’ve become some sort of “grocery shopping expert”. I’ve had several inspirations of course: (1) I used to go to a grocery near my school that was known for cheaper goods than the more-popular-but-more-expensive ones in the malls. I save on transpo cost and I save on groceries as well. (2) I also remember a Jesuit scholastic (now a priest) who would give us a grocery list that would already be numbered according to its aisle position in the groceries. Grocery shopping was literally a breeze because of that. (3) Right now, I keep track of my expenses in a handy file that is easy to open in my Mac. I learned that what you cannot measure, you really cannot manage; so I make sure that I’m able to measure my expenses, so I have a chance of managing it.

Who Would’ve Thought?!

[21 Jan 2010 | 0 Comments | ]

This was something I gave as a homily years ago when I was still a Jesuit and my parents celebrated their 25th Wedding Anniversary. In a world where talk is cheap and commitments more and more temporary, some people do stay together despite everything. This is about my mom and my dad. And even if their anniversary is still in June, I would like to share this at this early part of the year, because it is a good reminder for us to be there for the long haul.

We had the mass in my favorite chapel in Sacred Heart Novitiate, the Immaculate Conception Chapel. It has one of the most beautiful statues of Mary ever. I hope you could go to Sacred Heart Novitiate, in Novaliches, Quezon City, Philippines, and pray in that cute little chapel and behold the beautiful Mary praying with us and praying for us as we start our journeys this year. May she be there for the long haul. And may we continue to be pleasantly surprised at the many things happening to us.
